The City of Anniston has a number of tax rates. The tax rate used to determine the amount of tax to be collected will depend upon the nature and situation of the transaction taking place. Please refer to the Tax Rate Information link on the City’s website for more information. If you have any additional questions regarding which tax to collect on sales to your customers, please contact the City’s Tax Division at 866-717-7362.

Yes. The City of Anniston requires that all tax returns and payments be submitted electronically using the MAT website at the same time you file your State of Alabama taxes.

If a bulk return was filed on the MAT website which did not contain the City of Anniston tax information, an amended tax return should be submitted with the payment of the tax due. Please see the “How can I amend a previously filed return in order to correct an error?” Tax FAQ for more information regarding how to amend previously filed returns.

All tax returns must be filed, and payments made no later than the 20th day of the month after each filing period unless the 20th day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or City holiday. In those cases, the return and payment are due the following business day. Any tax return or payment submitted after the due date is considered late and is subject to penalty and interest.

Be advised: the cutoff time for timely filing a return and paying the tax through the MAT website is 4pm CST.

Yes. Penalty and interest is due if the tax is paid after the 20th day of the month in which the tax is due. The Failure to Timely File Penalty is 10% of the tax required to be paid or $50.00, whichever is greater. The Failure to Timely Pay Penalty is 10% of the tax required to be paid and interest accrues at a rate of 1% of the tax required to be paid per month.

If you discover that you have made an error on a tax return previously filed with the City of Anniston you should amend the return. Since the MAT website does not allow for the electronic amendment of a return, a blank tax return form should be retrieved from the City’s website and correctly completed in order to correct the error(s). The return form should be marked “AMENDED” and should contain the Confirmation Number assigned to the original tax return filed through MAT. You may then forward the return to the City along with payment of any additional tax, penalty and interest due.

Please send amended returns to the following address:
City of Anniston Finance Department
PO Box 935145
